Mercedes-Benz is making strides in reducing the environmental footprint of its electric vehicles (EVs) through the use of low-carbon aluminium. This innovative approach, developed in collaboration with Norwegian metals producer Norsk Hydro, significantly cuts CO2 emissions during production.

Low-carbon aluminium: Innovative Collaboration for Sustainability

The low-carbon aluminium is specifically designed for use in Mercedes’ new electric CLA model. According to company executives, this partnership exemplifies how luxury brands can prioritise sustainability by investing in environmentally friendly raw materials.

Gunnar Guthenke, vice president of Mercedes-Benz’s procurement and supplier quality, acknowledged the additional costs associated with sourcing low-carbon materials. However, he emphasised that sustainability is increasingly becoming a core component of desirable products.

Significant Emission Reductions

The new CLA model boasts a remarkable 40 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to its non-electric predecessor. Although the companies involved did not disclose specific cost figures, the shift towards low-carbon aluminium highlights a growing trend in the automotive industry.

Sharing the Sustainability Burden

Decarbonising production processes can be financially challenging, but partnerships like the one between Mercedes and Norsk Hydro help distribute these costs. Eivind Kallevik, CEO of Norsk Hydro, pointed out that while the price premium for low-carbon products exists, it has not deterred consumers. In fact, the demand for such sustainable options is on the rise, even in a challenging market.

Lower Carbon Emissions with New Aluminium Production

The aluminium produced for Mercedes at Norsk Hydro’s facility in Aardal, Norway, emits just 3 kg (6.6 pounds) of CO2 per kilogram, a stark contrast to the global average of 16.7 kg. This reduction is further enhanced by incorporating a quarter of recycled aluminium scrap into the production mix, minimising the need for energy-intensive primary metal production.

Addressing Past Criticism

In the past, Mercedes faced scrutiny over its sustainability initiatives, particularly during a period when it was entangled in a lawsuit from a climate advocacy group in Germany. The legal challenge, which questioned the company’s environmental impact, was ultimately dismissed by a German court in 2022, allowing Mercedes to refocus on its sustainability goals.
