Cto: Leadership Transition

Joerg Burzer, who is currently the head of production at Mercedes-Benz, will take on the additional responsibilities of development and procurement in his new role. The transition is set to take effect at the start of December, reflecting the company’s commitment to infusing its leadership with fresh talent and perspectives. Burzer, aged 55, is expected to drive the innovation necessary for the company’s future in the evolving automotive landscape.

Markus Schaefer’s Departure

Markus Schaefer has been pivotal in steering Mercedes-Benz towards electric vehicles, overseeing the company’s significant transition from traditional combustion-engine models. After three decades with the brand, Schaefer’s exit marks the end of an era as he departs the company to pursue new opportunities.

New Faces in Key Roles

In addition to Burzer’s appointment, Michael Schiebe, who is 42 years old and currently heads the high-performance division Mercedes AMG, will join the management board as the member responsible for production. These changes are part of a strategic initiative described by the company as a “targeted rejuvenation of the board.”

Strategic Goals Amid Industry Challenges

The announcements come at a time when Mercedes-Benz and other automotive companies face multiple challenges, including a slowdown in electric vehicle demand and heightened competition, particularly from China. The push for cost-cutting measures is becoming increasingly important as the industry pivots away from combustion engines towards more sustainable alternatives.

Martin Brudermueller, head of the supervisory board, expressed confidence in the new appointments, stating, “With Joerg Burzer and Michael Schiebe, two outstanding managers from our own ranks are taking over key departments that are of decisive importance for the future success of the Mercedes-Benz Group.” This sentiment underscores the belief that internal leadership can effectively navigate the complexities of the automotive sector’s evolution.
