The case began to unfold on March 14 when police received a tip-off about a vehicle moving suspiciously near a luxury apartment building in Agios Athanasios. Investigators discovered that the vehicle had been rented on March 11 by the 49-year-old suspect. A subsequent tip-off that same day reported individuals unloading items from rental cars into an apartment in Germasogeia prompted police to initiate a surveillance operation.

On Sunday, officers conducted a search of the vehicle and arrested the 49-year-old after he reportedly resisted. A court-authorised search of the apartment revealed an array of specialist lock-picking tools, including callipers, skeleton keys, and screwdrivers, along with various stolen items such as jewellery and a watch. These tools were believed to be linked to at least ten burglaries and were capable of bypassing security doors without leaving visible signs of forced entry.

Assistant Limassol Police Director Lefteris Kyriakou highlighted the sophistication of the gang’s methods, noting that they employed electronic cameras and other devices to monitor their targets, determining when residents were away. Investigators estimate the suspects had been operational for approximately 10 to 15 days.

Authorities suspect that the identification documents presented by the suspects are forged. Kyriakou stated that police would utilise forensic techniques to ascertain the suspects’ true identities and plan to contact Interpol and Europol for assistance in verifying the authenticity of the documents.

The suspects are facing serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour, participation in a criminal organisation, unlawful possession of property, forgery, impersonation, and the circulation of forged documents. Additionally, the 49-year-old suspect is charged with residing in Cyprus without the necessary permits, a violation dating back to November 8, 2023.
