Larnaca officials are demanding a clear timeline for the long-awaited Port and Marina development, expressing frustration over ongoing delays. During a recent meeting with Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras emphasised the need for a strict written schedule from the government regarding the project’s future.
Port and: Urgent Request for Clarity
Mayor Vyras raised concerns about the lack of progress during discussions with Vafeades, specifically regarding a revival proposal put forward by the Prosperity Group, a stakeholder in the previous contractor, Kition Ocean Holdings. “The first thing we asked the Minister for is the government’s position on a proposal that has come to light and is being discussed intensely in the city,” Vyras explained. He highlighted the necessity for official data before the city could form a definitive position.
Previous Projects Under Scrutiny
In addition to the Port and Marina project, Vyras pointed to delays in other initiatives, such as the architectural competition for the Larnaca Nautical Club and a study by the Greek Growth Fund (Superfund). “We must be more formal regarding the timelines we set,” he remarked, indicating a broader concern about the efficiency of project management in the city.
Government Commitment to Progress
Minister Vafeades responded to the concerns, reiterating the government’s commitment to advancing three key projects valued at approximately €30 million. He confirmed that dredging operations in the marina are scheduled for completion by the end of this month and approved the immediate commencement of the architectural competition for the Nautical Club.
Future Studies and Timelines
In a significant development, Vafeades announced that the study by the Greek Superfund, which aims to outline the long-term future of the Port and Marina infrastructures, is expected to be released next week. “We have committed to the Mayor and the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce (EVEL) that we will return immediately with clear timelines for the consultation and the next steps for the tender process,” he assured.
Calls for Job Creation
Dr Nakis Antoniou, President of the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce, echoed the sentiments of local leaders, urging the government to expedite the commencement of construction works to generate local employment. “This development is vital not only for the infrastructure but also for creating job opportunities in the area,” he stated.
Political Support for Development
The Democratic Rally (DISY) party has also weighed in on the matter, issuing a statement urging the government to consider all proposals related to restarting the development. They stressed the importance of moving forward with the Port and Marina project as a crucial element for the Cypriot economy.
As Larnaca grapples with these delays, the local community remains hopeful for a swift resolution. The emphasis on clear timelines and commitments from government officials could pave the way for much-needed infrastructural improvements that could enhance the city’s economic landscape.
