Keo is set to invest €50 million in a new distribution and spirits bottling centre in Limassol, pending final government approvals. This ambitious project is one of the largest private industrial developments in the region in recent years, and it aims to consolidate Keo’s production, processing, and logistics operations.
The beverage manufacturer has been navigating a lengthy waiting period for over two years for essential planning and building permits, which have been submitted to the relevant authorities. According to Entrepreneurial Limassol, a publication of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, these delays have been frustrating for Keo, as rising construction costs in Limassol have escalated the overall investment needed.
Keo: Final Stages of Approval
Currently, the licensing process is reportedly nearing its conclusion. The Limassol District Local Government Organisation (EOA Limassol) indicated that the necessary permits will be granted once approvals from the Department of Environment and the Department of Public Works are secured. Keo plans to commence construction immediately after receiving these permissions.
Strategic Location Choice
The new centre will be situated in the Archangel Michael area of Polemidia, selected for its operational advantages and economic viability. The location provides direct access to the Port of Limassol and the Limassol-Paphos motorway, making it a strategically beneficial site for logistics and distribution.
Project Timeline and Specifications
Once construction begins, the development is expected to take approximately 24 months to complete, covering around 44,000 square metres. Additionally, 9,612 square metres will be allocated as public green space next to the port access road, enhancing the area’s appeal.
Impact on Local Economy
Keo’s management emphasises that this investment will significantly contribute to the economic landscape of Cyprus, providing jobs and boosting local industry. Despite relocating many operations to the new site, Keo will maintain its brewery at its current location, which has historical significance for the company and the community.
Preserving Tradition Amidst Modernisation
Established in 1939, Keo’s brewery has a rich history, with the production of its flagship beer commencing in 1951. The brewery, which has a capacity exceeding 30,000 hectolitres of beer per month, is seen as a landmark in Limassol, intertwining the company’s legacy with the city’s heritage. Although brewing is not classified as heavy industrial activity, Keo assures that it does not generate significant disturbances for nearby areas.
Future Visitor Experiences
In line with safety measures, the brewery is currently closed to visitors, but plans are in place to redesign the facility for future public access. The company aims to enhance visitor experiences while maintaining the historical essence of the brewery.
Long-Term Vision
As Limassol continues to evolve, Keo believes the ongoing redevelopment between the Limassol Marina and the port, along with a planned coastal road connection, will attract more visitors. This development further solidifies their decision to keep the brewery at its historic site. Keo is also taking a measured approach regarding the waterfront properties that will become available after the relocation of some operations, acknowledging the increasing value of these sites.
