The funeral for Christos Christaki is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 4:30pm, taking place at the Church of Apostle Luke. In a poignant request, the family has asked attendees to wear white clothing instead of traditional mourning attire, and to forgo wreaths in favour of donations to support the family during this difficult time.
Incident at Mackenzie Car Park
The tragic events unfolded around 11:30pm on Monday, 18th August, in a large car park behind the entertainment venues in Mackenzie. Reports indicate that Christaki and a group of friends, all licensed national guardsmen, had gathered after leaving a local restaurant.
Initially treated as a traffic accident, the case took a different turn as new statements emerged. A 19-year-old friend of Christaki’s was arrested on charges of grievous bodily harm and negligent and reckless acts. Allegations suggest that Christaki was lying on the bonnet of the moving vehicle when he fell, leading to the fatal injuries.
Medical Response and Timeline
After the fall, Christaki was rushed to Larnaca General Hospital by friends. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was intubated and subsequently transferred to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after 6pm on Saturday at the American Medical Center in Nicosia.
Community Reaction
The young man’s untimely death has elicited a profound sense of grief within the Aradippou Municipality, prompting officials to cancel a festival event scheduled for Wednesday at St Fanourios Church courtyard as a gesture of support for the grieving family.
Legal Proceedings Underway
The friend arrested in connection with the incident has since been released without charge as investigations continue. Larnaca CID is currently examining the circumstances surrounding the fall, and the case will be forwarded to the Law Office to determine whether criminal prosecution is warranted.
The post-mortem examination was carried out by Dr Angeliki Papetta, the Head of Forensic Medicine, alongside forensic pathologist Dr Orthodoxos Orthodoxou, confirming the severe head trauma as the cause of death.
