The Great Sea Interconnector is expected to greatly benefit Cyprus, which is currently energy-isolated, according to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Speaking on Sunday, he emphasised that for this ambitious project to move forward, Cyprus must demonstrate its commitment to the initiative.
Mitsotakis outlined that the Greek government aims to commence the interconnector project, which will link Cyprus to Greece’s power grid. He stated, “I will do everything in my power to ensure that there is agreement with the Cyprus government.” However, he acknowledged that certain regulatory payment issues need to be resolved to facilitate progress.
Great sea: A Call for Commitment
The Prime Minister expressed optimism, suggesting that Cyprus will soon show clear intent regarding the project. “What I believe is that very soon we will have clear visibility from Cyprus, that indeed this project is wanted and understood and it pays the relevant price to initiate the procedures,” he said. This clarity is essential for moving on to subsequent planning stages.
Broader Energy Initiatives in Greece
Mitsotakis highlighted that the interconnection with Cyprus is part of a larger strategy for Greece’s energy network. He pointed out the successful completion of the interconnection with Crete and ongoing projects with the Dodecanese islands, as well as a significant link to Egypt.
Voices from the Cypriot Government
Cypriot Finance Minister Makis Keravnos has expressed concerns about the current sustainability of the Great Sea Interconnector project. He indicated that the project’s viability hinges on conditions set by Greece’s independent power transmission system operator, Admie, which holds a 51% stake in the initiative.
President Nikos Christodoulides recently stated that the project’s future is dependent on the implementation of these conditions. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stressed the importance of meeting these commitments promptly for the project to proceed, describing it as vital for the region, Greece, and Europe.

In a recent statement, Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis urged the Cypriot government to clarify its stance on the interconnector. The urgency of this clarification reflects the intertwined interests of both nations as they navigate the complexities of energy interdependence.

Complicating matters further, the European chief public prosecutor’s office (EPPO) has confirmed the launch of an investigation into the Great Sea Interconnector project. This scrutiny adds another layer of complexity to the proposed energy link, potentially impacting timelines and negotiations.
