Substantially strengthening the National Guard’s deterrent power is a key priority for the government, as stated by President Nikos Christodoulides during a recent visit to an army camp in Larnaca on Tuesday. Accompanied by Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas, Christodoulides addressed officers and soldiers, extending Christmas greetings and expressing his pride in the National Guard’s personnel.
National guard: Commitment to Human Resources and Welfare
In his address, President Christodoulides emphasised the importance of investing in the National Guard’s human resources and improving working conditions. “This investment begins with working conditions, benefits, in all that you deserve,” he stated, highlighting that decisions to enhance these areas have been made since the government assumed office. He reiterated, “As long as our homeland remains under occupation, the substantial strengthening of our deterrent power is our obligation. A duty we fulfil every day.”
Geopolitical Context and EU Presidency
Christodoulides also discussed Cyprus’ role as a member of the European Union, noting that the country will soon assume the presidency of the EU Council. He pointed out that defence and security issues are among the top priorities during this period. “We are in an area of particular geostrategic importance, plagued by many challenges, and our country is obliged – always as part of the solutions and never part of the problems – to strengthen the National Guard,” he explained.
Regional Defence Initiatives and Military Exercises
Recently returning from Israel, where he participated in the 10th Cyprus-Greece-Israel trilateral summit, Christodoulides revealed that defence and security were high on the agenda of discussions. The summit resulted in agreements for increased joint military exercises among the three nations and additional bilateral exercises. He also mentioned plans to procure equipment, aiming to utilise the €1.2 billion available through the EU’s SAFE funding instrument.
Collaboration with Israeli Defence Industry
In addition to military exercises, Christodoulides underscored the importance of creating synergies between Israeli defence firms and Cyprus’ emerging defence industry. This collaboration is expected to enable joint production, enhancing the capabilities of both nations. The president’s remarks indicate a commitment to not only bolster the National Guard’s deterrent power but also to foster international partnerships in defence.
Recognition of Service Members
During the visit, the President announced 231 promotions across all ranks of permanent non-commissioned army officers, which included two women. He extended his warmest congratulations to those promoted, recognising the dedication and service of the National Guard’s members. Additionally, he met with the National Guard’s sole female conscript, expressing pride in her enlistment. When asked for advice to other women considering service, she encouraged them to enlist, further highlighting the inclusive spirit within the National Guard.
Community Support and Engagement
Concluding his visit, Christodoulides made a gesture of goodwill by donating four televisions to the army camp, reinforcing the government’s support for the welfare of service members. This act not only aims to improve the living conditions of the troops but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to the National Guard.
As the government continues to prioritise the strengthening of the National Guard’s deterrent power, the focus on human resources, international collaboration, and community support reflects a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the security posture of Cyprus amidst regional challenges.
