Google’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence takes a significant step forward with plans to establish a dedicated AI campus in Seoul, South Korea. This groundbreaking initiative aims to foster collaboration between Google and local engineers as well as startups.
Ai campus: Collaboration with South Korean Authorities
The agreement was formalised during a meeting between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Google DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis. Kim Yong-beom, a presidential policy adviser, revealed this week that the two parties signed a memorandum of understanding to kickstart the project.
A Unique AI Hub
According to Kim, the Google AI campus will be the first of its kind for the American tech giant, highlighting a pivotal moment in the collaboration between a leading global technology firm and South Korea’s vibrant tech ecosystem.
Investment in Local Talent
In a bid to strengthen ties, South Korea has requested that Google send at least ten engineers from its headquarters in the United States to the new campus. Hassabis expressed willingness to consider this request, indicating a desire for hands-on involvement.
Training and Future Prospects
During the discussions, President Lee and Hassabis shared insights on the future of AI and its implications on job markets. Lee underscored the importance of implementing a base wage to mitigate potential job losses stemming from AI advancements.

The collaboration is not limited to Google alone. DeepMind aims to forge deeper partnerships with prominent South Korean companies, including Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics, and LG. Hassabis noted the intention to instigate new joint projects, leveraging South Korea’s robust industrial landscape.

Reflecting on the historical significance of AI development in South Korea, Hassabis mentioned the landmark match between DeepMind’s AlphaGo and Go player Lee Sedol a decade ago.
