Fifty-one people changed their legal gender and name in Cyprus between 2021 and today. Data from the Interior Ministry, reported by Philenews, reveals that 20 individuals assigned male at birth transitioned to female, while 31 people assigned female at birth changed their gender to male. Additionally, one person altered their legal gender without changing their name.
Gender change: Eligibility and Application Process
In Cyprus, any individual over the age of 18 can apply to change their legal gender and name. The application process is governed by procedures established by the Republic of Cyprus and entails a fee of €80.
To initiate the application, a written submission is required, which can take the form of a letter or a curriculum vitae. Alongside this, a sworn statement must be provided to the Registrar. Although not obligatory, applicants have the option to include medical certificates as proof of hormone therapy.
Submission Channels
Applications are directed to the relevant Registrar at the District Administration. For Cypriots residing abroad, applications can be submitted through the Republic of Cyprus’s diplomatic authorities, such as embassies or consulates.
Limitations and Confidentiality
It is noteworthy that the correction of registered gender is limited to two changes. All applications are assessed with a focus on personal data protection, ensuring confidentiality throughout the process.
New Documentation Procedures
Once a gender and name change is approved, the individual’s current official documents are cancelled. They must then apply for new documents reflecting their updated identity. This application for new documents should only occur after the gender change request has been approved, and old documents must be presented for cancellation.
The competent authorities emphasise that all procedures related to gender correction and the issuance of new documents are conducted with the utmost confidentiality, adhering strictly to personal data protection laws.
Challenges for LGBTQI+ Individuals
Despite the provisions in place for legal gender changes, LGBTQI+ individuals in Cyprus continue to face significant challenges. Reports indicate that many avoid seeking healthcare due to fears of discrimination and the associated costs. The societal stigma surrounding gender identity remains a critical barrier, impacting the wellbeing of many within the community.
