Community theatre: Exploring Local Narratives
The workshop series, titled O Topos en oi Anthropoi—translated as The Place is the People—aims to tap into the rich tapestry of stories, memories, and lived experiences unique to each community. Under the guidance of specially appointed facilitators from Thoc, these sessions will be offered at no cost to the public.
Fostering Expression and Creativity
Each workshop will serve as a vibrant platform for artistic expression and creativity, utilising theatrical tools and techniques. The primary objectives include enhancing community cohesion, sparking imagination, and reinforcing collective identity. Additionally, the workshops present an opportunity to document local narratives, empowering both individual and communal identities.
Building Community Bonds
The overarching aim of these workshops is to amplify the creative voices within the community, strengthen intergenerational bonds, and encourage a cultural renaissance rooted in the residents’ own experiences. Participants will collaborate to create a living theatrical narrative, with plans to share the materials produced not only within their communities but also to broader audiences.
Workshop Schedule and Locations
The workshops will take place every Saturday throughout February and March, from 10am to 1pm, across various locations. The initiative kicks off at the Agia Marina Xyliatou Cultural Hall under the leadership of Stelios Kallistratis. Residents aged 12 and above are encouraged to join, focusing on their memories and the stories intrinsic to their village community. This collaborative effort seeks to bridge the past and present, fostering an environment of coexistence and co-creation.
Kyperounta: A Journey Through Myths
In Kyperounta, sessions will be hosted at the Sanatorium by Mikaella Theodoulidou. This workshop will delve into the myths and truths of this historically rich area, facilitating a reawakening of memories. Theatre will play a vital role, transforming into an act of remembrance and collective reflection, revealing the soul and voice of Kyperounta.
Discovering Lania’s Stories
Following Kyperounta, participants will travel to Lania, where Nikoletta Prokopiou will lead sessions for residents aged seven and above. This workshop invites both Greek and English speakers to share their stories, memories, and local tales. By bringing these narratives to life, participants will use various artistic stimuli—such as a tree, a bus, or a photograph—to ignite their imaginations.
Reviving Traditions in Foini
At the Foini Cultural Centre, Stella Symeou will guide workshops that bring together three generations to create theatre by reviving local stories. This initiative seeks to cultivate appreciation for the area’s rich heritage and traditions, highlighting the importance of recognising and valuing what the community holds dear.
