France can count on Cyprus as the island prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union next month. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed confidence in Cyprus’s ability to help assert Europe’s interests and strategic autonomy during a recent meeting in Paris.
During the signing of a strategic partnership between the two nations, Macron highlighted the shared vision of a robust and sovereign Europe that both countries uphold. He emphasised the importance of facing various challenges, including unfair trade practices and threats to democracy, particularly for the youth in the digital age.
Macron reiterated that Cyprus would have France’s support in enhancing security and defence across the continent. “You can count on France’s help to continue our support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, and to reach a just and lasting solution to the ongoing conflict,” he stated, underlining the commitment of both nations to uphold peace and stability.
The discussion also touched upon economic strategies, with Macron promising that France would assist Cyprus in implementing an agenda focused on competitiveness and regulatory simplification. This agenda aims to encourage businesses and individuals within the EU to prioritise purchasing goods and services from the single market.
The capital markets union was another significant topic, as Macron explained that completing this EU initiative would facilitate easier investment and savings flow across member states. Such integration is expected to enhance financial resilience and promote economic growth within the bloc.
Looking ahead, Macron addressed the EU budget for the period from 2028 to 2034, asserting that it would serve to fortify a competitive and sovereign European Union. He also mentioned plans for strengthened agricultural and cohesion policies, indicating a holistic approach to the region’s development.
As the presidency transition approaches, Macron assured Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides that France would be a steadfast ally, ready to support initiatives and provide advisory assistance throughout Cyprus’s tenure.
