Brussels is the next stop for UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin, who continues to work under the direction of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Her mission aims to initiate a new series of contacts focused on convening an expanded conference addressing the longstanding Cyprus problem.
Cyprus problem: Scheduled Meetings with EU Leadership
On Monday, Holguin was scheduled to meet with President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. However, this meeting has been postponed until July 13. The discussions are set to revolve around EU-Turkish relations and their potential to facilitate progress on the Cyprus issue.
Engaging with the European Commission
Recognising the importance of collaborative efforts, Holguin has also expressed her desire to meet with President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. This meeting will be particularly significant as it coincides with the appointment of a new envoy by the Commission, who is expected to play a crucial role in these discussions.
Return to Cyprus for Further Discussions
Following her visit to Brussels, Holguin plans to return to Cyprus in early July. During her time on the island, she will engage with both President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. This will mark Holguin’s return to Cyprus after her previous visit in early June, where she held discussions with the two leaders in a bid to advance dialogue.
Recent Travels and Diplomatic Efforts
Holguin’s diplomatic journey has included visits to Athens and Ankara, where she sought to gather support and insights from key stakeholders in the region. Her ongoing efforts reflect the UN’s commitment to finding a resolution to the Cyprus problem, a long-standing geopolitical challenge in the Eastern Mediterranean.
