flu covid — flu covid — The number of people being recorded as having contracted influenza and Covid-19 is on a downward trend, according to health ministry deputy permanent secretary Elisavet Constantinou. Speaking during a visit to the Nicosia general hospital, she noted that this decline comes as the country anticipates the arrival of spring.
Flu covid: Winter’s Impact
Constantinou revealed that exactly 32 individuals died from one of the three respiratory diseases—influenza, Covid-19, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)—over the winter months. The peak of infections typically occurs right after the Christmas holidays, but the latest reports indicate that numbers are now decreasing.
Vaccination Recommendations
Despite the current decline, Constantinou cautioned that infection numbers could rise again at the beginning of next month. She strongly urged those in vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly, to get vaccinated if they haven’t already. She added that the spring wave of influenza and Covid-19 cases is generally milder than the initial winter surge.
Hospitalisation Rates
In terms of hospitalisation, Constantinou mentioned that the number of patients currently admitted with influenza or Covid-19 is somewhat lower compared to the previous week. This suggests an easing of pressure on the healthcare system as the winter season winds down.
Health Minister’s Assurance
Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides visited the Nicosia general hospital alongside Constantinou. He reassured the public that the situation across hospitals in Cyprus is manageable following the peak of the winter season. According to Charalambides, there are no additional measures required to maintain the functionality of the healthcare system at this time.
Challenges in Emergency Departments
When questioned about the recent increase in admissions to accident and emergency units, Charalambides acknowledged this as a perennial challenge during winter. He remarked that the current levels of recorded infections are roughly consistent with last year’s figures, possibly even slightly lower.
Ongoing Management
Charalambides expressed confidence in the state health services organisation (Okypy), stating that they are managing the situation effectively. His ministry is reportedly kept informed on a daily basis regarding bed occupancy rates, ensuring a clear understanding of the current healthcare landscape.
