- cyprus drug — A 23-year-old man has been arrested at Larnaca airport in connection with a major drug trafficking case involving cannabis, methamphetamine and cocaine, police confirmed on Wednesday.
- Legal proceedings against the four earlier suspects are already in motion, while the fifth individual is expected to undergo questioning and potentially face charges in the near future.
The arrest took place shortly after 2.30pm as the man arrived from abroad. Officers from the drug law enforcement unit (Ykan) detained him under a court warrant, which was issued following evidence collected during the ongoing investigation.
With this latest arrest, five individuals are now linked to the case, which first came to light during a coordinated police operation in Nicosia on July 29. During that operation, officers discovered a significant stash of drugs hidden within an apartment belonging to one of the suspects.
Evidence gathered by police indicates that the seized substances comprised 6.3 kilograms of cannabis, approximately 984 grams of cannabis resin, 713 grams of methamphetamine, 93 grams of cocaine, and 337 hand-rolled cannabis cigarettes.
The investigation began when a 21-year-old man was first apprehended by officers on July 29 while driving through Nicosia. Following a search of his flat, which turned up the drugs, he was promptly arrested. Subsequently, another 21-year-old was taken into custody on August 6 after further evidence came to light.
On August 11 and 12, two additional suspects, aged 22 and 20, were arrested under court warrants, adding to the growing list of individuals linked to the trafficking operation. The cases of these four suspects have been filed with the criminal court of Nicosia, where they will face charges related to drug trafficking.
The latest arrest of the 23-year-old adds another layer to the investigation, although police have not disclosed specifics about his role in the network. His detention suggests that inquiries are broadening as authorities work to dismantle the operation.
