fidias panayiotou — Cypriot MEP Fidias Panayiotou is currently under investigation for allegedly embezzling EU funds, according to reports that surfaced on Tuesday. Despite this, Panayiotou, 25, has stated he is unaware of any ongoing probe into his activities.

In a conversation with Phileleftheros, a local newspaper, Panayiotou mentioned that he has not received any “official information” regarding an investigation. He acknowledged the media reports surrounding the allegations and revealed plans to address the situation through a video that he intends to upload shortly.

The investigation is said to be led by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, with some reports suggesting that the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) is also involved. Allegations emerged approximately one to two months ago, directed to Cyprus’ anti-corruption authority, claiming that Panayiotou misappropriated EU funds by renting a villa in Limassol, which he reportedly declared as ‘office space’. The monthly rent for the property is estimated to be between €5,000 and €6,000.

Following its inquiry, Cyprus’ anti-corruption authority has referred its findings to European prosecutors, who have commenced their investigation. Although the anti-corruption authority has not publicly commented on the matter, reports from Politis indicate that the authority has confirmed the transmission of information to European authorities.

In a dramatic turn, some news outlets have claimed that Laura Kovesi, the European Chief Prosecutor, has urged that the investigation be expedited, aiming for its resolution ahead of the parliamentary elections in Cyprus scheduled for May.

Panayiotou, who entered politics after gaining fame as an influencer, recently founded a new political party called Direct Democracy, which will compete in the upcoming elections. He previously ran as an independent candidate in the June 2024 European Parliament elections, securing a seat with 71,330 votes. His YouTube channel boasts an impressive 2.67 million subscribers, contributing to his public profile.
