Anita Schjøll Abildgaard, co-founder and CSO of the Norwegian AI company Iris.ai, shared her experience with the EIC. She credited the council for keeping her company afloat, stating, “If it wasn’t for the EIC, our company would no longer exist.” Iris.ai develops software that transforms complex data into formats usable by AI systems, automating a process that traditionally required extensive human effort. As AI continues to dominate the tech landscape, Schjøll Abildgaard is optimistic about competing against established US firms, asserting that Europe’s guarantees on security and privacy offer a competitive edge.
Quantum Computing Innovations
Another notable participant was Jan Goetz, CEO and co-founder of IQM Quantum Computers, a Finnish company at the forefront of quantum technology. Goetz highlighted IQM’s position as a leader in delivering quantum computers to data centres, stating, “We are the world leader in selling and shipping quantum computers to data centres.” He emphasised the potential of quantum computing to solve problems unattainable by conventional systems, likening its impact to that of the early internet.
Turning Waste into Resources
Among the diverse innovations presented was Valentyn Frechka’s Releaf, which has developed a method to create paper from fallen leaves. Frechka’s initiative addresses the waste generated by cities collecting fallen leaves, transforming them into valuable packaging materials. He remarked, “Every year, cities spend time and money collecting hundreds of thousands of tonnes of fallen leaves. We see them as a raw material that can be turned into things like paper and packaging.” This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also showcases the potential for sustainable practices in the industry.
