European Researchers’ Night attracted thousands of visitors to the State Fair in Nicosia on September 26, 2025, as reported by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF). The event, now in its 19th year, is proudly touted as Cyprus’ premier celebration of science, technology, and innovation.

For nearly two decades, the RIF has collaborated with key research and innovation stakeholders to connect the public directly with the realms of scientific exploration. This year’s event was held under the auspices of President Nikos Christodoulides, showcasing the importance of public engagement in scientific discourse.

A Diverse Audience
The event witnessed a diverse turnout, welcoming both children and adults, with an impressive 3,000 students attending. This significant participation highlights the event’s role as a vital educational experience, immersing young minds in hands-on activities that spark curiosity and foster a love for science.
Innovative Features and Activities
Visitors had the opportunity to explore over 70 booths, where they could observe live experiments and engage in various educational and entertaining activities. A standout feature this year was the introduction of holograms of historical scientists, who interacted with attendees, answering questions in real time. This innovative approach captivated the audience and provided a unique twist to the traditional exhibition format.
Competitions Showcasing Young Talent
The event also hosted annual competitions such as the Design Thinking Challenge and Science Unfold, which aimed to highlight the most creative ideas from the younger generation. Awards were presented to the winners, with the best booth accolade going to “Mito Rangers: Cellular Heroes in Action” from the Biobank Cy Centre of Excellence, further encouraging student participation and innovation.
Support from Officials
Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou praised the event’s success, particularly noting that almost 3,000 children attended in the morning alone. “This fact by itself says a lot,” he stated, emphasising the importance of engaging young people in science, especially in an era where screen time dominates their daily lives. He thanked parents for their support, which played a crucial role in motivating children to participate actively.
Commitment to Future Innovation
Damianou remarked on the event’s significance in showcasing the growth of Cyprus’ research and innovation ecosystem. He highlighted the government’s aim to further strengthen this sector, noting that the rising interest among young people in science indicates a promising future for the country’s innovation efforts.
Celebrating Cypriot Innovation
Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides echoed these sentiments, stating that the event has become an established institution that reflects the vitality of Cypriot innovation. He pointed out that Cyprus achieved 25th place in the Global Innovation Index for the first time, a testament to the country’s dynamism and potential in the field.
Inspiration for the Next Generation
“The most important thing, however, is that through such actions we inspire the new generation to follow the path of science, research, and innovation,” Skourides added, reinforcing the idea that events like European Researchers’ Night play a pivotal role in shaping future scientists and innovators.

The RIF’s General Director Theodoros Loukaidis highlighted that the event showcased the virtues of curiosity, creativity, and boldness—key drivers of innovation that shape society’s future. He reaffirmed the RIF’s commitment to supporting young minds, researchers, and businesses by providing the necessary tools and opportunities for research and innovation to flourish in Cyprus.
A Fitting Finale
The evening concluded with an entertaining stand-up science show titled “Science Rap Battle” by Science Reactors, combining humour and knowledge to leave the audience inspired. This engaging finale capped off a successful event that not only celebrated science but also fostered a sense of community and collaboration among participants.

European Researchers’ Night is part of a broader initiative by the European Commission, taking place simultaneously in over 460 cities across Europe. It aims to showcase the impact of science on citizens’ daily lives through innovative and engaging formats. Funded by the European Commission under the project “Mission Possible: Researchers on board for an inclusive and sustainable future,” this event highlights the importance of public engagement in scientific research.
