A Lifetime of Service
Dikomitou’s journey in the Guiding movement began in her childhood in Famagusta, where she participated in local Guide groups inspired by British Girl Guide and Girl Scout units. Following the independence of Cyprus, she became a founding member of the Cyprus Girl Guides, playing a pivotal role in its establishment.
Achievements in Guiding
Her leadership was instrumental in securing full membership for the Cyprus Girl Guides in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) in 1977. Over the years, Dikomitou occupied various senior roles, including the position of chief commissioner, which she held for an unprecedented duration from 1978 to 1987 and again from 1990 to 2006. Her passion for guiding and her ability to inspire were evident in every role she undertook.
Recognition and Awards
Dikomitou’s contributions to the Guiding movement were recognised not only locally but also on an international level. In 1974, during a time of great hardship following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, she was awarded the International Walter Donald Ross certificate of merit by WAGGGS. This accolade was in recognition of her and her colleagues’ efforts in assisting refugees, demonstrating the deep commitment of the Girl Guides to their community.
Humanitarian Efforts
The Cyprus Girl Guides, under Dikomitou’s leadership, organised and managed 14 refugee camps in the government-controlled areas, providing essential services such as food, clothing, psychological support, and creative activities for children. They also initiated workshops for women, which contributed to the development of Cypriot handicrafts, showcasing the organisation’s holistic approach to community support.
Continuing Her Legacy
In 2023, Dikomitou was honoured again by WAGGGS with a certificate of commendation for her efforts in leading the hosting of children from Chernobyl in Cyprus. This recognition underscores her unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes and her desire to create a better world for children.
