This charming installation features nearly 700 metres of track, meandering through the Cypriot landscape, climbing a small mountain and passing by illuminated buildings that come alive after sunset. The mastermind behind this delightful project is Johann Jakob, a Swiss and Liechtenstein lawyer who has resided in Cyprus for over a decade.

Train travel: A Journey Inspired by Home
More than five years ago, a casual suggestion from friends transformed into a remarkable undertaking. Jakob recalls how the idea of building a model train in his garden blossomed into an ongoing project, now nurtured by a dedicated team of eight to ten members. Construction initially began in 2019, and since then, the group has met regularly to enhance the layout, ensuring the miniature railway remains a work in progress.
Recreating Swiss Heritage
Jakob’s vision was to recreate a piece of his homeland in Cyprus, and he has succeeded in bringing the iconic RhB route to life in miniature form. “All wagons and locomotives are real copies,” he explains, mimicking the actual Glacier Express that traverses the stunning landscapes of Switzerland, from St Moritz to Zermatt.
During daylight, intricate details come alive, with tiny figures depicted in various activities, while at night, the illuminated buildings and trains create a magical atmosphere. It is a tribute to the heritage of the full-sized Glacier Express, which spans approximately 290 kilometres and takes eight hours to complete.
Technical Challenges and Team Spirit
Despite its modest size, maintaining the 700-metre track poses several challenges. The team must address constant repairs and adjustments due to the island’s heat and storms. “It’s an important challenge,” Jakob notes, emphasising the depth of technical knowledge required to keep the project thriving. With a mix of expertise in technical, computer, and engineering skills, the team is well-equipped to tackle weather-related issues and ensure the layout operates smoothly.
A Social Endeavour
This project is as much about community as it is about trains. The diverse group of Cypriots and expats brings together a wealth of expertise, with each member taking responsibility for different aspects of the railway. “Everyone is a specialist,” Jakob states, highlighting the collaborative spirit that has developed among the team.
A Unique Attraction
Jakob proudly boasts an impressive collection of approximately 30 locomotives and 60 wagons, each designed with distinct features, including sound effects and station announcements. The replica of the Glacier Express stands out as a highlight, representing “one of the jewels” of the collection.
The miniature railway has become a point of interest for curious locals and tourists, many of whom express their surprise and delight upon discovering the “Only Garden Model Train in Cyprus.” Guests often take their time exploring the intricate details scattered throughout the layout, from figures enjoying a bath to those climbing the miniature mountain.
Open Days and Community Involvement
Jakob hosts an annual open day, inviting visitors to experience the railway from morning until night, showcasing the enchanting Swiss mountainside both in daylight and illuminated evenings. This initiative not only highlights the model but also fosters community engagement.
As cashier of the RhB Swiss model train association, which has ten members, Jakob plays a pivotal role in promoting the hobby. The association welcomes new participants with enthusiasm, offering materials and support so that everyone can join in the fun without any financial burden. “The work will forever be in progress,” Jakob shares, indicating the potential for new details, fresh faces, and more open days in the future.
