The group, consisting of 17- and 18-year-old boys and girls, departed from Larnaca on 22 October and was scheduled to return home on 2 November. Their mission involved travelling to Kilya village to assist in building schools and creating playgrounds for children.
However, shortly after their arrival, the situation in Tanzania deteriorated significantly. Days after they landed, internet access was abruptly cut off due to the impending elections. As tensions escalated, the military was deployed to the streets, with reports of fatalities among protesters.
In a further blow, the airline responsible for their travel informed the delegation that their return flight had been cancelled. The students and teachers, along with their families, have been left in a state of uncertainty, desperately awaiting news of how they can return home safely.
On 31 October, the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Cyprus issued a travel advisory urging Cypriot citizens already in Tanzania to exercise heightened caution. The ministry’s advisory highlighted the ongoing unrest, including the imposition of a curfew, and advised citizens to avoid all gatherings and demonstrations.
Families of the stranded group are anxiously seeking assistance from the Foreign Ministry, asking for a repatriation plan to bring their loved ones home. As the political situation continues to evolve, the students and teachers remain vigilant, following the advice of local authorities while hoping for a resolution.
