- The Cyprus real estate agents are actively tackling reforms and illegal brokerage practices, as discussed in the recent annual general meeting held by the Cyprus association of real estate agents.
On November 15, the meeting took place at the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where members gathered to review their actions and outline strategic priorities for the future of the profession. Association president Christos Nicolaou highlighted several key achievements during his address.
Real estate: Successful License Renewals
Nicolaou announced that the association successfully renewed 90 per cent of licences for registered real estate agents and assistants, following effective interventions with the Cyprus Real Estate Agents Registration Council. Additionally, he noted that support was extended to members whose licences are still pending, demonstrating the association’s commitment to its members.
Clarification on Employment Regulations
In a significant development, the Labour Ministry responded positively to the association’s request for clarity regarding the employment of real estate assistants on a part-time basis. Nicolaou confirmed that no prohibitions exist in the legislation, which is a relief for many working in the sector.
Proposals for Legislative Amendments
The meeting also saw Nicolaou present proposals aimed at amending the Real Estate Agents Law. These proposals include changes to the composition and term of the council, prerequisites for registration and licence renewal, and the establishment of a disciplinary council to enhance regulatory oversight of the profession.
Combating Illegal Brokerage
Addressing the issue of illegal real estate brokerage, Nicolaou made a passionate appeal to members, urging them to assist in the recording and reporting of such activities. This initiative is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the industry and protecting consumers.
Upcoming Elections and Future Goals
Looking ahead, Nicolaou informed members about the preparations for the upcoming elections for the Cyprus Real Estate Agents Registration Council in 2026. He specifically mentioned Vasilis Artemiou as a candidate for the position of president, indicating a proactive approach to leadership within the organisation.
Appreciation for Support
In closing, Nicolaou expressed gratitude towards the board of directors for their cooperation, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce for its ongoing support, and the association’s legal counsel and auditors for their contributions. He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to seeking solutions for the sector’s challenges and safeguarding the interests of professional real estate agents.
