cyprus negotiators — Cyprus negotiators will convene on Wednesday to set the stage for important discussions regarding the island’s future. Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman’s representative, Mehmet Dana, are scheduled to meet in the morning. This meeting aims to prepare for the leaders’ gathering on 11 December, a significant date in the ongoing dialogue about the Cyprus issue.

These preparatory talks come ahead of a joint meeting on Thursday involving both leaders and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín. Holguín has been on the island since last Thursday evening, engaging in separate discussions with President Nikos Christodoulides and Erhurman to address the pressing concerns surrounding the negotiations.

On the same day as the leaders’ meeting, the two will visit the Committee on Missing Persons, highlighting a sensitive aspect of the Cyprus conflict. This visit represents an effort to acknowledge and address the unresolved issues that deeply affect many families on both sides of the divide.

The presence of EU envoy for Cyprus, Johannes Hahn, adds another layer of significance to the discussions. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis noted this as a “fortunate coincidence”, emphasising the critical role that the European dimension plays in the resolution process.

Letymbiotis expressed optimism that the upcoming joint meeting on 11 December might represent a decisive step forward in resuming negotiations. As tensions have persisted, both sides are keen to find common ground that could lead to lasting peace and reunification.

In preparation for these talks, President Christodoulides has convened a National Council meeting for Friday. This gathering aims to brief political leaders on the outcomes of recent contacts and discussions, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned as the negotiations progress.

The atmosphere surrounding these talks is one of cautious hope, as both sides recognise the importance of dialogue in addressing long-standing grievances. With the international community closely observing, the negotiators are tasked with paving the way for meaningful conversations that could impact the future of Cyprus.
