eurobasket — Cyprus suffered a 91-64 defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their EuroBasket debut at the Spyros Kyprianou arena in Limassol. This marked a historic moment for Cyprus’ national basketball team, as it was their first appearance in Europe’s premier basketball competition.

Despite the excitement surrounding the match, the Cypriots struggled against a well-rounded Bosnian team, led by NBA star Jusuf Nurkic of the Utah Jazz. Nurkic was instrumental in the game, contributing 18 points to the Bosnian total.

The Bosnian squad demonstrated their depth, with players Amar Gegic, Amar Alibegovic, and Adin Vrabac each adding ten points. Impressively, every Bosnian who stepped onto the court managed to score, with the exception of Adnan Arslanagic.

For Cyprus, Konstantinos Simitzis emerged as a bright spot, scoring 22 points amidst the team’s struggles. The 30-year-old, playing for Petrolina Aek Larnaca, showed resilience despite the overwhelming defeat. Additionally, 22-year-old Filippos Tigkas from Keravnos contributed 12 points, but it was clear that the home team was outmatched throughout the game.

Looking ahead, Cyprus will have another challenge when they face Greece on Saturday, followed by matches against Spain on Sunday and Georgia on Tuesday. Their final group game will be against Italy on Thursday. The competition is fierce, with only the top four teams from their six-team group advancing to the next round.

All of the group’s matches will take place in Limassol, providing a home-court atmosphere that Cyprus hopes to leverage in future games. The team will aim to learn from this initial setback and improve their performance as they continue in the tournament.
