Cyprus will mark Europe Day on May 9 with a series of events designed to promote European values and enhance awareness of the European Union. Organised by the European Parliament Office in Nicosia, the festivities aim to highlight the cooperation and shared identity among EU member states.

Europe day: Kick-off Reception at Europe House
The events will commence on Friday at 12.30pm with a reception at Europe House. This gathering is co-organised by the European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus. Attendees will include diplomats, state officials, and representatives from partner organisations.
Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna is scheduled to address the participants on behalf of President Nikos Christodoulides. Additional remarks will be made by European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis and other representatives of EU institutions in Cyprus.

Raising the EU Flag in Nicosia
On Saturday morning, the EU flag will be raised at Eleftheria Square in Nicosia, specifically in the courtyard of the old city hall at Davila Bastion. This initiative is backed by the municipality of Nicosia.
The ceremony will feature speeches from President Christodoulides, Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos, and EU representatives, underscoring the significance of unity within the European community.
Celebrations Continue in Larnaca
Later that day, celebrations will shift to Larnaca, where another event is organised by the European Parliament Office and the European Commission Representation, in partnership with the Larnaca municipality and the European Information Centre of Larnaca. This event will begin at 5pm and will include information stands that showcase EU programmes, organisations, and embassies involved in the EU.
At 6pm, the Larnaca Municipality Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra will parade, followed by the opening of a photo exhibition titled Below the Surface: A Dive into Marine Sciences. This exhibition aims to highlight marine science and its relevance to the EU’s environmental policies.
A video message from European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will be screened around 7.30pm, offering insights into the EU’s vision and goals. The evening will culminate with a performance by the Larnaca Municipality Children’s Choir, followed by a concert featuring music inspired by Mediterranean and European traditions.

Organisers have emphasised that the events are open to the public, aiming to foster a closer connection between citizens and the values of the European Union. These celebrations not only commemorate Europe Day but also serve to strengthen the bonds among EU member states.
