This figure also indicates a remarkable 20 per cent growth when compared to the same period in 2023. The NBA highlighted that online betting remains the predominant form of gambling activity in the country during the July to September timeframe.
Class A and Class B Revenue Breakdown
Class B operators, which include online betting platforms, generated €235.7 million in total gross revenue. In contrast, Class A land-based operators saw earnings of €76.8 million. Despite a slight dip of 1 per cent from the previous year, Class A revenue is still 7 per cent higher than two years ago. Class B revenue, on the other hand, experienced a significant 10 per cent increase year-on-year and is up by 25 per cent compared to the third quarter of 2023.
Player Payouts and Earnings
Player payouts across both categories totalled €277.5 million, reflecting a 9 per cent annual increase and a 20 per cent rise compared with 2023. Online players were the biggest beneficiaries, receiving €214.3 million during this quarter. The overall betting earnings, which is the difference between player pay-ins and pay-outs, amounted to €35 million, representing a 5 per cent decline from the same quarter last year. Class A earnings fell by 1 per cent to €13.6 million, while Class B earnings dropped by 8 per cent to €21.4 million.
Licensed Betting Premises and Employment Trends
The number of licensed Class A betting premises across Cyprus decreased by 2 per cent year-on-year, totalling 465 locations. Of these, 165 are situated in Nicosia, 133 in Limassol, 83 in Larnaca, 48 in Paphos, and 36 in Famagusta. Concurrently, employment within licensed betting shops also saw a reduction of 2 per cent, with current staffing numbers at 1,495.
Regulatory Compliance Efforts
The NBA has reported an improvement in regulatory compliance, noting a 28 per cent drop in licence cancellations and withdrawals compared to the third quarter of 2024. At the same time, the authority is actively working to combat unlicensed betting activities. By the end of September, the list of blocked unlicensed betting websites had reached 21,825, with 192 new additions during the quarter, marking a 5 per cent increase on an annual basis.
