Cypriots stuck: Students in Tanzania for Volunteer Programme
Among the 22 Cypriots are 14 students from a private school, who are in Tanzania as part of a volunteer programme. They are accompanied by four adults, which includes two supervisors and two volunteers from Greece. The remaining four citizens are in Tanzania for personal reasons.
Location and Safety Concerns
The group is approximately 300 kilometres away from the current unrest centred around Dar es Salaam. The foreign ministry’s spokesman, Theodoros Gotsis, noted that the crisis management centre has been activated to coordinate assistance efforts.
Maintaining Communication
Efforts are being made to ensure continuous communication with those impacted. The ministry is collaborating closely with the high commission in Nairobi, which oversees matters in Tanzania. Gotsis mentioned that authorities are also in touch with the families of the students and the other Cypriots currently in the country.
Travel Advisory Issued
In light of the situation, the foreign ministry has issued warnings urging Cypriot citizens to exercise caution when travelling to Tanzania due to ongoing unrest. Safety First
Gotsis assured that the priority remains the safety of the individuals in Tanzania, stating, “At the moment, there are no flights available. They will return as soon as it is safe.” The ministry has encouraged those abroad to register with the online platform Connect2CY for better communication while travelling.
