Cypriots increasingly choose social media as their primary source of news, even as they recognise the misinformation it spreads. A recent survey by the Cyprus Journalists Union revealed that 72% of news consumers rely on social media and television, reflecting a significant trend in audience preferences.
Conducted by Cypronetwork in July, the survey involved a stratified representative sample of 1,000 people across Cyprus. It highlighted that online portals and radio are also popular, attracting 45% and 43% of respondents, respectively. In contrast, local print media, Greek press, and foreign press garnered much lower preferences at 15%, 10%, and 9%.
The findings illustrate a paradox: while social media and television dominate the information landscape, they are also seen as leading sources of fake news. The survey indicated that 21% of participants felt that fake news permeated their feeds
