The Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA) has received notable recognition for its Ecosystems Restoration Education (ERE) initiative, as the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) announced that CYMEPA’s funding proposal has been selected among only three others worldwide under the LEAF – Learning about Ecosystems and Forests programme.
This prestigious programme is implemented across 28 countries, highlighting the significance of CYMEPA’s achievement in being chosen for this international honour. The selected proposals this year include projects from Cyprus, Argentina, Malaysia, and Armenia.
CYMEPA’s proposal, aptly named “Join the FBI: Forest Bureau of Investigation,” was praised for its innovative approach and potential for widespread impact. The initiative aims to connect educational tools with environmental stewardship, promoting healthy living and sustainability among students and teachers alike.
Central to the ERE initiative are activities that engage students in forest research, neighbourhood ecosystem restoration competitions, and school gardening programmes. These themes are designed to mobilise educators and students, fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of forest ecosystems, food systems, and community health.
The funding awarded to CYMEPA amounts to €5,000, which will support the implementation of the project. Additionally, the proposal incorporates elements from the Magic World of Culture initiative, a component of the Net Zero 4 Youth project, enhancing its interdisciplinary and innovative framework.
The Ecosystems Restoration Education (ERE) project, which operates within the LEAF programme, aims to blend practical environmental restoration practices with teacher professional development. By transforming natural areas into “living classrooms,” the ERE initiative fosters crucial skills related to habitat care, biodiversity, and sustainable practices among participants.
Both ERE and LEAF are initiatives of FEE, an organisation committed to making restoration education accessible worldwide. As a member of FEE, CYMEPA contributes to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, implementing local actions that resonate on a global scale.
