- A large quantity of counterfeit goods was seized on Wednesday from tourist shops in the Ayia Napa area, according to the customs department's announcement on Friday.
In a coordinated operation across four premises, officials discovered approximately 2,700 items of clothing and accessories. These included wristwatches, glasses, hats, bags, and wallets, all deemed to violate intellectual property rights.
The operation was initiated following intelligence reports regarding the sale of counterfeit items in popular tourist locations. Upon inspection, shop owners admitted to the offences, leading to the seizure of the goods.
As a result of the findings, the owners agreed to out-of-court settlements, allowing them to avoid further legal action. This approach is part of a broader strategy by the customs department to combat the distribution of counterfeit products that undermine legitimate businesses and pose risks to consumers.
The customs department has stressed the importance of protecting intellectual property rights, particularly in areas frequented by tourists, where counterfeit goods tend to proliferate. They have encouraged consumers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to counterfeit sales.
Authorities are continuing their efforts to ensure that Ayia Napa remains a safe and reputable destination for visitors. This operation is seen as a crucial step in maintaining the integrity of the local market and protecting the rights of original creators.
