The ArcGIS Greece–Cyprus 2025 User Meeting is bringing together experts in data innovation, with a focus on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. The Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organisation (CAPO) is participating with three officers, showcasing their advancements in land management and data analysis.
Launched on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, in Athens, the meeting is organised by Marathon Data Systems and aims to highlight the latest developments in GIS technology. This gathering draws professionals from both Greece and Cyprus, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange in the geospatial field.
CAPO’s presentation titled “CAPO – land parcel identification system and use of ESRI applications” will underline its expertise in utilising ESRI’s advanced GIS tools to enhance operational efficiency and maintain accurate agricultural land data.
Since September 2022, CAPO has implemented a significant upgrade to its geographic section of the land information system (LIS), now powered by ArcGIS Pro, which is renowned as ESRI’s most advanced GIS technology. This upgrade marks a pivotal advancement in how CAPO manages land data, having replaced the older ARCINFO/DIMS Application that was retired in August 2022.
ESRI has long been a leader in GIS technology, having introduced the Department’s first computerised geographic system back in 1999 using ARCINFO software. The latest application, ArcGIS Pro, empowers users to visualise and analyse spatial data in both 2D and 3D formats. This innovative tool provides seamless access to various applications, maps, and datasets tailored to specific workflows, enhancing productivity and precision in geospatial tasks.
One of the key features of ArcGIS Pro is the organisation of related tasks into a single Project, ensuring efficient data management. Projects are stored in a designated system folder and contain their own geodatabase and toolbox, streamlining workflows for users. Furthermore, users can create projects from standard templates or custom templates, such as those developed specifically for the Department of Lands and Surveys.
The introduction of this new system signifies a major milestone in the modernisation of geospatial data management, with all survey work now processed through the upgraded system. CAPO is also keenly focused on emerging technologies, particularly the integration of artificial intelligence in geographic information systems (GeoAI). They describe this area as promising, offering potential enhancements to existing control systems and procedures.
