This week, Alpha Bank Cyprus hosted a business-focused gathering at the Amarande hotel in Ayia Napa, bringing together local stakeholders to discuss the potential of the Famagusta district in shaping the Cypriot economy. The event, which took place on June 3, was designed to underline the bank’s ongoing support for local businesses.

Famagusta: A Focus on Economic Growth

The event placed significant emphasis on enhancing local economic prospects, particularly through the upgrading of tourism products and leveraging bank financing to initiate new investment projects. Attendees included representatives from local authorities, prominent business leaders, professionals, and bank executives, all engaged in discussions about the future of the district.

Insights from Alpha Bank Leadership

In his address, Miltos Michaelas, the chief executive of Alpha Bank Cyprus, underscored the essential role the Famagusta district plays in various sectors including tourism, hospitality, trade, and services. He acknowledged the district’s contributions to national competitiveness and its outward-looking growth.

“Behind every business there are decisions, risks, plans, people and daily effort,” he stated, emphasising the bank’s commitment to understanding the realities faced by local enterprises. Michaelas further noted, “Our role is to understand this reality and stand by our customers with experience, clear judgement and solutions that have practical value.”

Supporting Businesses in a Changing Environment

Michaelas highlighted the necessity for businesses to have partners that offer stability and responsiveness, especially in a rapidly changing economic landscape. He mentioned the bank’s investments in modern banking, which aim to deliver faster services, enhanced security, and solutions tailored to the real needs of customers.

The Tourism Sector as a Growth Driver

Christoforos Stylianides, the chief wholesale banking officer at Alpha Bank, also spoke at the event, focusing on the tourism sector’s pivotal role in the Famagusta district’s economic growth. He pointed out that tourism not only supports employment but also attracts investment and sustains broader economic activity.

Stylianides remarked on the district’s current phase of upgrading, stressing the importance of higher-quality tourism and infrastructure development. He noted that improvements in accommodation and visitor experiences are designed to bolster Famagusta’s position on the international tourism stage.

Bank Financing and Local Development

During his address, Stylianides reaffirmed Alpha Bank’s strong involvement in financing tourism projects, describing it as a core lending sector for the bank. He mentioned that the bank has significantly increased its presence in Famagusta in recent years, supporting hotel upgrades and new high-end developments that enhance competitiveness and add value to the local economy.

He also announced the establishment of a business centre in the district, which aims to improve customer service and support local enterprises effectively. This initiative, according to the bank, reflects its commitment to staying close to the Famagusta business community by providing financing solutions, expertise, and practical assistance in a region experiencing strong development momentum.
