mafia state — AKEL and Volt have called a joint protest outside the Law Office in Nicosia on Monday, June 22 at 18:30, in response to the Independent Authority against Corruption’s recent report on the Mafia State investigation.

The two parties expressed that the Authority’s findings corroborate the experiences of society over the years under the Anastasiades administration. They highlighted concerns regarding extensive entanglement, scandals, and the concealment of corruption that reportedly characterised the Anastasiades-DISY government.

In their announcement, AKEL and Volt stated, “The offences for which former President Nicos Anastasiades and his associates are under scrutiny are extremely serious and bring shame on the country.” They further accused the current Christodoulides government of perpetuating a system marked by glaring conflicts of interest and institutional manipulation.

The parties emphasised that the situation of impunity must come to an end, labelling it a universal demand from society for a thorough and independent investigation into the report’s findings. They called for the dismantling of the existing entanglement and concealment systems, as well as a restoration of the rule of law.

AKEL and Volt outlined four specific demands:

  • The immediate resignation of Attorney General Giorgos Savvides and Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides;
  • An independent investigation into the offences detailed in the report;
  • The prosecution of those implicated and accountability for guilty parties;
  • The restoration of institutions and adherence to the rule of law.

The planned protest reflects growing frustration among citizens regarding perceived corruption and the need for transparency within the government.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond to these calls for action and whether the demands put forth by AKEL and Volt will be addressed.
