The upcoming Aglandjia deputy mayoralty race has become the focal point for major political parties, including the Democratic Rally (DISY), AKEL, and the Democratic Party (DIKO), following the election of a new House President. As the June election date approaches, various names have surfaced as potential candidates, although no party has made a definitive decision yet.
Aglandjia deputy: DISY Prepares for Internal Primaries
Sources within DISY have revealed plans for internal primary elections to determine the party’s official candidate for the Aglandjia deputy mayoralty. Formal entries are due by Monday, with a party ballot scheduled for Friday, allowing DISY members in Aglandjia to vote for their preferred nominee.
Among those under consideration are two current DISY municipal councillors: Prokopis Prokopiou and Christos Liverdos. Liverdos has been serving as the temporary deputy mayor since he secured the highest number of preference votes in the recent 2024 elections. Reports indicate that additional names may be put forward by party members by Monday.
DIKO’s Potential Candidacy Discussions
The Democratic Party (DIKO) is also evaluating its options. Former Aglandjia Mayor Kostas Kortas has been discussed as a potential candidate; however, he has not yet formally approached party leadership regarding this possibility. Information obtained by Phileleftheros suggests that Kortas is scheduled to meet with the DIKO president on Monday, but this meeting will focus on broader discussions about the deputy mayoralty race rather than on his candidacy.
Kortas has previously run as a DIKO parliamentary candidate in Nicosia, where he secured 1,177 preference votes. His experience in local politics could be an asset as DIKO considers its strategy moving forward.
AKEL’s Candidate Considerations
Meanwhile, AKEL is expected to finalise its internal decisions by Monday. Among the names being discussed is Dr Antri Chatziandreou, a former AKEL parliamentary candidate in Nicosia who notably received 3,188 preference votes in her last campaign. Although AKEL officials have refrained from commenting publicly on their candidate selection process, discussions within the Aglandjia municipal department are ongoing.
Other figures previously mentioned in relation to AKEL’s selection process include Evgenia Aletra and Mikaela Kythreoti Mchlapa. The involvement of these individuals indicates a competitive atmosphere within the party as they prepare for the election.
Key Dates and Voting Rights
The election for the Aglandjia deputy mayoralty is set for 28 June, with the official submission of candidacies required by 18 June. Only registered citizens residing in the Aglandjia municipal district will have the right to vote in this election, making it crucial for candidates to engage effectively with the local electorate leading up to the vote.
As political manoeuvrings intensify, the upcoming weeks will be pivotal for all three parties as they seek to establish their positions and secure support within the community. The outcome of this election could significantly influence the political landscape in Aglandjia and potentially impact broader regional dynamics.
