online romance — An online romance scam has left a 78-year-old man reeling after he lost more than €64,000. The victim reported the fraudulent activity today to the Financial Crime Investigation Office of the Paphos CID.
The incident began in August when the man received a friend request on a social media platform from someone he did not know. Trusting the digital world, he accepted the request, which ultimately led him down a costly path.
After establishing communication with the unknown individual, the scammer employed various deceptive tactics to persuade the man to send substantial amounts of money. Over the course of September, he transferred the staggering sum to 16 different bank accounts located in various countries.
Authorities are currently investigating the case, and the Paphos CID is committed to uncovering the full extent of the scam. This incident highlights the growing concern surrounding online scams that target vulnerable individuals.
In light of this alarming report, the police are urging the community to exercise caution when forming online relationships. They stress the importance of verifying the identity of individuals before sharing personal information or sending money.
As online interactions become increasingly common, the risks associated with them continue to rise. The public is reminded to remain vigilant and sceptical of any requests for money, especially from individuals they have not met in person.
