- cyprus division — Spain is “deeply concerned” about the ongoing division of Cyprus, stated the country’s new ambassador in Nicosia, Mercedes Alonso Frayle, on Friday.
In her remarks, Frayle underscored Spain’s close ties with Cyprus, highlighting the painful consequences that the island’s division has had on both communities since the military intervention of 1974. “As a close friend of Cyprus, Spain is deeply concerned about the division of the island since the military intervention of 1974 and the painful consequences of this division for both communities,” she said during her presentation of credentials to President Nikos Christodoulides.
Frayle affirmed Spain’s commitment to supporting the territorial integrity of Cyprus, insisting that it should be free from any international interference. She reiterated Spain’s backing for the United Nations’ efforts to establish a bicommunal, bizonal federation founded on political equality.
“We hope that in the near future, the parties involved will resume the negotiation process within the framework of the UN Security Council’s resolutions,” she stated, reflecting Spain’s hope for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing issue.
In addition to her comments on the Cyprus problem, Frayle noted the growing interest among Spanish students in the educational opportunities available in Cyprus. She remarked that there is “still plenty of room for encouraging exchanges between peoples,” suggesting a bright future for bilateral relations beyond political discussions.
Highlighting the historical ties between Spain and Cyprus, Frayle expressed her intention to deepen the already excellent relations between the two nations during her term as ambassador. “You can be sure that during my term as ambassador to Cyprus, I will seek to maintain and further deepen the already excellent relations between our two countries,” she affirmed.
