Gloria Gallery emphasises the importance of Kotsonis, stating, “He is considered one of the most important and widely recognised Cypriot artists of his generation.” Born in Palaichori in 1940, Kotsonis has an impressive academic background; he studied painting at Saint Martins School of Art in London before receiving scholarships to further his studies in China and Czechoslovakia. He graduated in 1967 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague as an Academic Artist.
Now residing in Paphos, Kotsonis returns to the spotlight with a new body of work that merges three distinct art forms. This exhibition not only highlights his evolution as an artist but also reflects the convergence of Western European artistic movements and Byzantine influences.
As described by the gallery, “Morphoplastic harmony, refined craftsmanship and the multilayered treatment of colour compose a cohesive and aesthetically rigorous artistic proposal.” This blend of styles results in a mature visual language that balances contemporary themes with timeless elements.
The exhibition runs from February 20 to March 10 at Gloria Gallery, with opening night festivities starting at 7.30pm. The gallery will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30am to 12.45pm and Monday to Friday from 5.30pm to 8pm.
