Published on Friday, the survey indicates that 75 per cent of Cypriot respondents feel their country is under threat. This positions Cyprus among the EU member states with the highest perception of threat, surpassed only by France at 80 per cent and Denmark and the Netherlands, both at 77 per cent.
The European Commission highlighted that a significant number of Europeans share this sentiment, with 68 per cent overall believing their nation is facing threats.
Eu security: Confidence in EU Defence Capabilities
Cypriots exhibit greater confidence than the EU average regarding the bloc’s ability to enhance Europe’s defence and security. About 73 per cent of respondents in Cyprus trust the EU’s efforts, compared to the EU average of 52 per cent.
Concerns About International Threats
The survey also revealed that 76 per cent of Cypriots are worried about international threats impacting the Republic, which is notably higher than the EU average of 68 per cent concerning threats to their home countries.
Defence Spending Perspectives
When it comes to defence spending, opinions among Cypriots are mixed. While 51 per cent believe that the EU is allocating sufficient resources towards defence and security, 26 per cent feel that Cyprus itself is not investing enough in these areas.
Perceptions of EU Investment
On the topic of EU-level investment in security, 47 per cent of Cypriots feel that the bloc is making the right investments, while 26 per cent think it should invest more. This contrasts with the EU averages of 42 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively.
