The autopsy, performed by forensic pathologist Nicolas Charalambous, revealed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to obstruction of the respiratory tract by food. This unfortunate incident occurred on Friday afternoon at the central prison.
At approximately 3.55pm, a member of the prison staff discovered the man in his cell showing no vital signs. He was promptly transported to the accident and emergency unit at Nicosia general hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The man’s family has been notified of the circumstances surrounding his death. The incident raises concerns about the safety measures in place for inmates, particularly regarding meal supervision and choking hazards.
