Larnaca municipality has introduced a package of emergency water-saving measures aimed at reducing demand by 10 per cent. This decision follows an extraordinary meeting of the district’s board of directors held on Thursday. The proactive measures are designed to avert water cuts, ensuring that available reserves are adequate to meet rising demand, particularly during the summer months when consumption traditionally escalates.
Water cuts: Strategic Focus on Water Loss Reduction
Since taking over the management of water networks on July 1, 2024, the Larnaca water authority has made significant strides in reducing water losses through organised and systematic efforts. This initiative is central to the municipality’s approach to managing the water supply effectively.
Repair and Maintenance Initiatives
Key to the emergency measures is an intensified programme aimed at repairing damage across the water supply network. This includes prompt action to fix leaks, which are a major contributor to water loss. By addressing these issues swiftly, the municipality hopes to enhance the efficiency of the water distribution system.
Demand Management Strategies
To further manage water consumption, the plan includes restricting water supply to green areas and private plots where irrigation occurs. This measure is expected to significantly reduce water usage in non-essential areas, thereby reserving more for critical needs.
Integrating Boreholes to Supplement Water Resources
In addition to the current supply, the municipality plans to incorporate boreholes into the water network where feasible. This strategy aims to supplement the available resources, particularly during peak demand periods.
Consumer Engagement and Water Efficiency
As part of the initiative, consumers will be provided with water-efficient nozzles for installation on taps in collaboration with the water development department (WDD). Officials estimate that these devices can reduce household water consumption by as much as 40 per cent, offering both financial savings for residents and conservation benefits.
Enforcement of Water Use Regulations
The municipality will also intensify controls against the use of hoses under the special measures outlined in the water-saving law. Authorised teams from the municipal water authority, along with police officers, will conduct organised inspections throughout the district. Their focus will include monitoring activities such as washing pavements, terraces, and vehicles, which can lead to excessive water use.
Public Awareness Campaigns on Water Conservation
In tandem with enforcement, there are plans to bolster public awareness campaigns promoting rational water use. These campaigns will provide guidance on best practices for water conservation, encouraging residents to adopt more sustainable habits.
Information Brochure Distribution
An information brochure will be distributed to all consumers as part of the initiative. This brochure will remind residents of their obligation to maintain a water storage tank with a minimum capacity of 800 litres and ensure that pumping systems in apartment buildings are operational. Such measures are crucial for effective water storage and management.
Community Cooperation for Sustainable Water Management
The Larnaca water authority has emphasised that collective cooperation among residents is vital to avoid future water cuts. As the island faces increasingly challenging conditions regarding water resources, community involvement will play a significant role in managing these limited supplies effectively.
Looking Ahead: Addressing Water Challenges
By implementing these emergency measures, Larnaca municipality aims to safeguard its water supplies and prepare for the challenges posed by climate change and growing population demands. The proactive steps taken now are essential for ensuring that the community has access to necessary water resources in the future.
