petroleum sales — The total sales of petroleum products in Cyprus rose by 4.9 per cent in December 2025 compared to the same month a year earlier, according to data released by the Statistical Service (Cystat) on Tuesday. This increase brought total volumes to 123,274 tonnes, largely driven by significant growth in marine and aviation fuels.
Strong Demand for Marine and Aviation Fuels
The most notable boost came from marine gasoil provisions, which surged by an impressive 76.3 per cent year-on-year. Aviation kerosene also saw a substantial rise, climbing by 23.6 per cent. This trend indicates a marked recovery in both sectors, likely reflecting an uptick in maritime and air travel.
Other Notable Increases
Asphalt sales experienced a significant increase as well, rising by 51.4 per cent. Heating gasoil saw a 10.9 per cent rise, while motor gasoline and road diesel increased by 7.5 per cent and 6.1 per cent, respectively. These figures suggest a growing demand for various fuel types across different sectors of the economy.
Declines in Certain Fuel Sales
Conversely, there was a dramatic decline in the sales of light fuel oil, which plummeted by 82.8 per cent. Heavy fuel oil sales also decreased by 34.9 per cent, and liquefied petroleum gas sales dipped slightly by 0.6 per cent. These downward trends in specific fuel categories illustrate shifting consumption patterns among users.
Filling Station Sales on the Rise
Sales from filling stations showed a positive trend, rising by 5.7 per cent year-on-year to reach 64,311 tonnes. This increase is indicative of higher consumer activity and greater reliance on automotive fuels.
Monthly Trends Show Mixed Results
On a month-on-month basis, total petroleum product sales grew by 2.8 per cent compared to November 2025. Motor gasoline sales were particularly strong, rising by 9.7 per cent, while road diesel saw a more modest increase of 2.1 per cent. However, aviation kerosene provisions fell by 18.3 per cent, and marine gasoil sales dropped by 9.6 per cent, highlighting variability in demand across different fuel products.
Yearly Overview of Petroleum Sales
Looking back at 2025 as a whole, total sales of petroleum products increased by 4.8 per cent compared to the previous year. This growth was led primarily by marine gasoil provisions, which surged by 90.3 per cent, and aviation kerosene, which rose by 13.0 per cent. Asphalt sales also increased by 15.6 per cent.
Other products saw more modest gains, including kerosene up by 6.1 per cent, heating gasoil by 5.8 per cent, liquefied petroleum gases up 3.7 per cent, motor gasoline by 3.5 per cent, and road diesel by 2.7 per cent. However, the overarching trend also included significant declines, with light fuel oil sales dropping by 52.9 per cent and heavy fuel oil by 12 per cent. Sales from filling stations managed to rise by 3 per cent year-on-year, despite the fluctuations in other categories.
