iranian missiles — Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas has firmly denied reports that Iranian missiles were fired towards Cyprus, challenging assertions made by UK Defence Secretary John Healey. In a statement to the Cyprus News Agency, Palmas refuted claims that missiles were intercepted in the vicinity of the island, which had circulated on Sunday.
Healey, speaking to Sky News, had mentioned that Iran launched two missiles aimed towards British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus as part of retaliatory strikes over the weekend. However, he added, “We are pretty sure they weren’t targeted at our bases.” This statement raised concerns about the safety of the region amidst escalating tensions.
In support of Palmas, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis clarified on Saturday that the reports regarding missile launches towards Cyprus were untrue, stating, “There is no indication whatsoever that there was a threat to the country.” This assurance comes as part of efforts to maintain public confidence during a period of heightened military activity in the region.
The conflicting narratives emerged following Iran’s missile strikes on US bases across the Gulf, which were described as retaliation for recent joint US and Israeli military actions that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. The developments have heightened tensions in the region and have led to increased scrutiny of military actions by various nations.
While the government has downplayed the threat to Cyprus, it has also stated that competent authorities are closely monitoring the situation. The focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of the island amidst these unfolding events.
