chlorakas turtle — chlorakas turtle — Environmentalists are demanding a criminal investigation into the alleged killing of a sea turtle, after initial police charges were deemed inadequate. Friends of the Earth Cyprus has called on the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment to revisit the case, criticising the initial police response as a mere “public nuisance” charge that fails to acknowledge the severity of the situation.
The controversy ignited after a video surfaced last week, showing the mistreatment of a protected turtle on a beach in Chlorakas. According to the NGO, the footage depicts a brutal encounter that directly led to the animal’s demise. This contradicts the findings of the Veterinary Services, which concluded that the turtle was already dead, and the Fisheries Department’s commendation of the local Community Council for adhering to procedures.
Activists argue that the individuals involved did not provide the required care but instead inflicted harm on the turtle. Under Cypriot environmental law, such actions carry serious repercussions. Despite this, the police charged the suspects with a minor public nuisance offence and subsequently released them, a decision that has incited public outrage.
In response to the situation, Friends of the Earth Cyprus has sent a formal letter to the Minister of Agriculture, urging a comprehensive re-examination of the evidence and new interrogations. They have highlighted a perceived lack of transparency in the application of environmental legislation, indicating that the current approach does not reflect the gravity of the alleged crimes.
The organisation has also requested information on how the state is managing the case to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. As the calls for justice grow louder, the fate of the individuals involved remains uncertain, as does the potential for strengthened protections for marine life in Cyprus.
