The recent fire tragedy at a night club in Switzerland has brought the issue of night club safety into sharp focus. On New Year’s Day, a fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana resulted in the deaths of 40 individuals and injuries to 116 others, prompting fire services in Cyprus to issue urgent warnings regarding fire safety practices in entertainment venues.

Just two days following the incident, the Cypriot fire service took to social media to raise awareness about the critical importance of fire safety measures. A public safety video released on January 3 showcased the devastating aftermath of the Swiss fire, including images of charred interiors and collapsed structures. The video posed a stark question to viewers: “Are there emergency exits, accessible staircases, emergency lighting?” If the answer was no, the video cautioned, patrons should leave immediately.
Andreas Kettis, a spokesperson for the fire service, reiterated this warning during a television appearance, outlining the potential risks that venues in Cyprus face. He emphasised the need for entertainment establishments to be built using non-flammable materials and to ensure that adequate escape routes are available. Kettis reflected on the Swiss tragedy, noting that many safety standards had not been followed, leading to tragic consequences.
“We’re talking about young kids, and unfortunately, as the fire service, we are being proven right regarding our intense concerns and the strictness we maintain on fire safety matters,” he stated. Kettis expressed a desire for legislation that would require venue management to provide certification from authorised inspectors verifying that safety measures are in place.
As Kettis stressed, compliance must go beyond mere inspections. Both venue owners and patrons need to be vigilant about safety. He cited examples of how improper placements of furniture can obstruct escape routes, rendering safety measures ineffective. “The fire won’t spare you, and it’s not the flames themselves that will harm you,” he warned, highlighting the lethal nature of smoke inhalation.
The fire at Le Constellation bar ignited during New Year’s celebrations, with over a hundred patrons present. Reports suggest that the blaze may have originated from sparklers igniting acoustic foam on the ceiling, a material that should not have been exposed under Swiss regulations. Initial attempts to extinguish the fire failed, and a rapid spread led to chaos as patrons attempted to flee through narrow exits.
Survivor accounts revealed that the emergency exit was not accessible during the fire, raising questions about safety compliance at the venue. This has prompted a criminal investigation against the bar’s owners, as broader concerns about safety compliance and possible unauthorised renovations have come to light.
In Cyprus, while there has not been a fire incident as severe as that in Crans-Montana, ongoing concerns about fire safety regulations in entertainment venues linger. Inspections conducted in September 2024 uncovered numerous violations, including unlicensed venues and illegal alcohol sales, suggesting a significant oversight in nightlife regulations.
Recent reports from the Audit Office also indicated that a Nicosia event venue operated without the necessary approvals for an extended period. This venue, which hosted various large events, had begun construction illegally and continued to function despite lacking the required safety certifications. Auditor-general Andreas Papaconstantinou described this situation as a “textbook case” of unauthorised building operations, criticising the practice of granting retroactive permits that undermine the safety and fairness in the industry.
As Kettis and others highlight, the responsibility for safety does not rest solely with authorities. Owners of entertainment venues must prioritise compliance with regulations, and patrons must remain vigilant about their surroundings and emergency protocols. Awareness of emergency exits and adherence to safety measures can be the difference between a safe night out and a potential disaster.
