More than 30,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid have been delivered to Gaza through Cyprus’ Amalthea aid corridor since its establishment, according to Foreign Minister Constantinos Komnos. Speaking to the newspaper Phileleftheros on Sunday, Komnos stated that the aid primarily consists of food supplies, highlighting the ongoing commitment of Cyprus to support the humanitarian needs in the region.
Amalthea corridor: Details of the Humanitarian Aid Efforts
Since the inception of the Amalthea corridor, Cyprus has taken significant steps to facilitate the transfer of aid to Gaza. The Foreign Minister noted that personnel have been stationed at the civil-military coordination centre (CMCC), located northeast of the Gaza Strip in Kiryat Gat, to coordinate these efforts effectively. This operational centre plays a crucial role in ensuring that the aid reaches those in need.
Expanding the Scope of Aid
In an effort to further enhance the humanitarian assistance provided, the Cypriot government is considering expanding the list of products that can be sent to Gaza through the Amalthea corridor. This includes the potential introduction of dual-use products. This move aims to address the diverse needs of the population in Gaza, which has been significantly impacted by ongoing conflicts.
International Recognition and Future Prospects
Komnos pointed out that Cyprus’ involvement in humanitarian efforts has been acknowledged internationally, particularly through President Nikos Christodoulides’ invitation to a summit focused on the future of Gaza held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in October. This recognition by both the United States and Egypt underscores the importance of Cyprus’ contributions to the humanitarian landscape.
Systematic Aid Flow through Ashdod
Looking ahead, there is optimism regarding the potential for a systematic flow of aid to Gaza through the Israeli port of Ashdod. Komnos indicated that this could be achieved using the existing mechanisms established in coordination with the United Nations Office for Project Services (Unops). This approach aims to create a more stable and reliable channel for delivering humanitarian assistance.
Recent Aid Shipments
Just days ago, another shipment of 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid departed Cyprus, which has already been unloaded and is currently being distributed to the civilian population in Gaza. These recent efforts reflect a sustained commitment to addressing the urgent needs of those affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Challenges of Previous Aid Routes
The Amalthea plan has faced its share of challenges in the past. For instance, Sigrid Kaag, the UN’s special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, expressed doubts in 2024 about the plan’s effectiveness, stating that it could “never be a substitute” for traditional land-based aid deliveries. Previous attempts to deliver aid via a temporary jetty constructed off the coast of Gaza in May 2024 were met with structural issues and operational difficulties.
This jetty, which was funded by the United States, was only operational for 12 days before being permanently removed due to severe weather conditions. It had broken apart during high winds, resulting in four US army vessels being washed ashore near Ashkelon. Although it was repaired and reattached, concerns over its stability led to further removals.
Improvements in Aid Delivery
Despite the setbacks faced by the temporary jetty, recent developments indicate that aid deliveries to Gaza have become more stable since transitioning to direct shipments to Ashdod. This shift has allowed for a more consistent flow of humanitarian assistance, which is critical for the affected population.
Strategic Plans for Future Aid
During the Sharm El-Sheikh summit, President Christodoulides highlighted the Amalthea initiative as part of a broader strategic plan aimed at realising the future of Gaza as envisioned by US President Donald Trump. This plan emphasises the need for efficient mechanisms and procedures, developed within the framework of the Amalthea corridor, to facilitate rapid security checks in Cyprus, ensuring that aid can reach those who need it most without unnecessary delays.
