Evrovizion: A Platform for Diverse Voices

The ambitious project, EVROVIZION.CROSSING STORIES AND SPACES, is an exhibition initiated by the ifa (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations) and is brought to life in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Cyprus and the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC). Running from 11 November 2023 until 10 February 2024, the exhibition seeks to highlight the often-overlooked geopolitical and cultural spaces of southeast and eastern Europe, shedding light on their significance within the broader context of European identity.

Challenging Perceptions of European Identity

At the heart of EVROVIZION lies a deep commitment to exploring the intricate tapestry of European identities. By focusing on less visible and marginalised regions, including the multi-ethnic city of Sarajevo, the exhibition endeavours to provoke thought and dialogue around what it means to belong to Europe today. The title itself, EVROVIZION, is a synthesis of various languages, symbolising unity in diversity and the potential for collective understanding.

Engagement with Local Artistry

The launch event on 13 December 2025 offers a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with local artists, curators, and writers who have contributed to the ongoing discourse surrounding European identity. Featured artists Kyriakos Theocharous and Nurtane Karagil will be present, along with local curator Maria Efstathiou and magazine co-editor Evagoras Vanezis. Their insights, alongside the newly developed works by artist Adnan Softic, promise to enhance the understanding of the exhibition’s thematic richness.

Exploring the Nicosia Edition

The Nicosia edition of the magazine serves as a vital component of the EVROVIZION project, showcasing the exhibited works while also providing context and reflections on previous exhibitions. This publication not only documents the journey of the exhibition but also serves as a platform for critical engagement with the themes presented. Attendees will have the chance to collect copies of this edition, along with those from prior locations, as well as a specially designed tote bag to commemorate the event.

Creating Dialogue Spaces

One of the core objectives of EVROVIZION is to foster dialogue around contemporary social and political challenges. By collaborating with regional artists and curators, the exhibition aims to create spaces for open conversation and reflection. Each new location on the exhibition’s tour introduces fresh artistic projects, ensuring that the dialogue remains dynamic and responsive to local contexts.

Contributors to the Project

The magazine is edited by Sanja Kojic Mladenov and Evagoras Vanezis, with contributions from various writers, including Evagoras Vanezis and Dr Esra Plümer Bardak. The coverage of related events, such as “A Dialogue on European Identities,” has been enriched by the insights of Dr Elena Stylianou, Nicolas Lambouris, and Johanna Diehl. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of multiple perspectives in understanding the complexities of European identity.

Artistic Residencies and Translations

Additionally, the exhibition features a Pickle Bar Residency, which has been instrumental in nurturing artistic talent through Ioulita Toumazi and Miriam Gatt. Their contributions further enhance the exhibition’s cultural depth. Translators, including Diamanto Stylianou and Mehmet Ratip, have also played a crucial role in making the exhibition accessible to a wider audience, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder the exchange of ideas.

Looking Ahead

The launch event is more than just a celebration; it is a call to action for all who are interested in the evolving narrative of European identity. The EVROVIZION.CROSSING NICOSIA initiative stands as a testament to the power of art and dialogue in bridging cultural divides, encouraging attendees to reflect on their own identities in the context of a shared European future.

As the event approaches, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus invites everyone to join in this exploration of stories and spaces, contributing to a richer understanding of what it means to be part of Europe today. With the exhibition’s emphasis on inclusivity and engagement, it promises to be a milestone event for Nicosia’s cultural landscape.
