Arrival of the Marathon Flame
In a ceremonial event on Friday evening, the Marathon Flame, which is traditionally used in the Athens Classic Marathon, arrived in Larnaca. The flame’s arrival was an exciting prelude to the marathon and was welcomed by Larnaca’s deputy mayor, Iasonas Iasonides.
Iasonides expressed gratitude to the Hellenic Athletics Federation and Anastasios Chrysinas, the deputy mayor for sport from the town of Marathon, for sending the flame to Cyprus. He stated, “This is a sign of honour, friendship, cooperation, and love for us, since Larnaca is celebrating again.”
Warm Wishes from Marathon Officials
Chrysinas conveyed the warm wishes of Marathon’s mayor, Stergios Tsirkas, and expressed hopes for a successful event, saying, “I wish a good race to those participating.” This friendly gesture underscores the camaraderie and connection between the two towns, linked by the marathon’s historical significance.
Last Year’s Race Highlights
The previous year’s marathon saw impressive performances, particularly in the men’s category. British runner Dasos Gonnella, aged 42, took the title, completing the course in a remarkable time of two hours, 39 minutes, and nine seconds. Close behind him was 37-year-old Slovenian Emil Zohorovic, who finished in second place.
The women’s race was equally competitive, with 31-year-old Rebecca Clarke from the UK winning in a time of three hours, two minutes, and eight seconds. The second-place runner, Dissing Messell Gitte, aged 50 from Botswana, finished with a time of three hours, six minutes, and 17 seconds. Notably, Cypriot runner Stavri Thrasyvoulou made her mark, completing the course in three hours, 10 minutes, and five seconds, securing a spot on the podium.
Honouring the Oldest Competitor
The marathon also celebrated its oldest competitor, Gote Granholm from Finland, born in 1954, who completed the course in four hours, 17 minutes, and 20 seconds. His participation highlights the inclusive nature of the event, encouraging runners of all ages and abilities to join in the festivities.
