- A Turkish Cypriot wanted in connection with the notorious Serbian hitmen case was arrested yesterday at the Agios Dometios checkpoint by Cyprus police, but he is expected to be released shortly.
In spring 2016, authorities received intelligence suggesting that the individual was planning to transport two Serbian hitmen from the illegal Tymbou airport to the Agios Dometios area. These men were allegedly in Cyprus with the intent to assassinate several individuals, including Alexis Mavromichalis, Iosif Iosif, Christos Demetriou, and Fanos Kalopsidiotis.
Following the receipt of this information, an arrest warrant was issued for the Turkish Cypriot. It took nearly nine years for this warrant to be executed, occurring only when he attempted to cross into the Republic of Cyprus through the checkpoint.
Despite the arrest, reports indicate that officials do not plan to pursue a court order for his detention. Sources suggest that no legal complications have arisen, and there is a lack of evidence to support any felony charges against him. The case involving the Serbian hitmen has already been adjudicated in the courts, leaving the status of the Turkish Cypriot in a precarious position.
This latest development raises questions about the continued ramifications of the Serbian hitmen case, which had sent shockwaves through the region when it first emerged. As the file containing evidence related to the Turkish Cypriot was forwarded to legal representatives earlier today, the situation has brought renewed attention to the unresolved elements of this long-standing case.
