  • The election of Tufan Erhurman as the new Turkish Cypriot leader has opened a new chapter of hope for Cyprus reunification, according to Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis.

Speaking on Sunday night, Gerapetritis expressed optimism about Erhurman’s pro-reunification stance, which he believes aligns with the aspirations of both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. This shift comes at a crucial time as discussions surrounding the long-standing division of the island have often stalled.

Cyprus reunification: Calls for UN-Inspired Solutions

Gerapetritis emphasised that any progress towards reunification should adhere to the resolutions set forth by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council. He mentioned that these guidelines are essential for ensuring peace and prosperity for all communities on the island.

A Renewed Diplomatic Effort

The Greek foreign ministry has reportedly been working closely with the Republic of Cyprus to reinvigorate discussions about the Cyprus issue, which had seen a significant period of inaction. Gerapetritis noted, “The Greek foreign ministry, in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, has undertaken tireless efforts… to bring the Cyprus issue back to the UN Secretary-General’s agenda.”

Looking Ahead to Informal Meetings

As the diplomatic environment evolves, Gerapetritis is optimistic about upcoming informal meetings that aim to facilitate broader discussions regarding Cyprus’s future. He stated, “We look forward to working together on the next step in the upcoming informal meeting in a broader format.”

A Message of Unity

In his remarks, Gerapetritis also reflected on the importance of unity in today’s turbulent international landscape. “Divisions have no place in the modern, turbulent international landscape. Cyprus must convey the universal message of synthesis and unity,” he remarked, reinforcing the need for collaboration between the two communities.
