This dedication involves exploring all diplomatic and negotiating opportunities to restart peace talks.
Speaking at the annual memorial service for fallen soldiers of the 3rd Company of the 211 Infantry Battalion in Kaimakli, Antoniou highlighted the progress made by Nicosia despite ongoing challenges. Notably, he referenced the convening of two informal multilateral meetings under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and the appointment of a personal envoy to assist in the negotiations.
“The next milestone is the informal expanded conference announced by the UN Secretary-General, set to take place after the ongoing process for the election of the new Turkish Cypriot leader,” he stated. This upcoming conference is seen as a pivotal moment for the peace process.
Antoniou expressed optimism about engaging with the new Turkish Cypriot leader once the elections conclude, affirming that President Nikos Christodoulides is prepared to meet the new leader “in good faith and sincerity.” The aim is to find a solution that aligns with UN and EU principles.
Addressing the complexities of the situation, Antoniou acknowledged Turkey’s persistent intransigence. “We are realistic and harbour no illusions,” he remarked, stressing the government’s methodical and persistent efforts to leverage every diplomatic opportunity to counter the Turkish side’s negative stance.
Honouring the fallen soldiers, Antoniou paid tribute to the bravery exhibited by the 3rd Company during the Turkish attacks in July 1974. He recounted how they faced overwhelming odds while defending the northern outskirts of Nicosia, led by Captain Charalambos Lottas. Their actions were described as a heroic effort to protect the freedom and dignity of the Cypriot people.
“Today we honour those who fought to defend freedom, uphold legality, and those who fell for the territorial integrity of our homeland,” Antoniou stated. He emphasised the importance of remembering their sacrifice and the commitment to striving for a free and reunited Cyprus.
With resolving the Cyprus issue listed as the government’s highest national priority, Antoniou assured that Nicosia would persist in its determination and consistency to create conducive conditions for resuming talks.
